Lou Whittaker saved dozens of lives during numerous rescue efforts over his career, RMI said. Lou Whittaker declined to join the Everest expedition that made his brother famous because he and a partner were planning to open a sporting goods store in Tacoma. Lou Whittaker took thousands of clients up Mount Rainier, and made it a point of pride how his company trained its guides and clients alike. Lou Whittaker survived avalanches, severe storms and other harrowing episodes, and he lost several friends or clients on expeditions. Lou and Jim Whittaker led the party that attempted to recover the victims, but they were never found.

The pomp, the glamour, the conflicts, the characters: When it comes to Britain's royal family, Americans can't seem to get enough. That was evident this week following the announcement of King Charles III's treatment for cancer. They're references for power and prestige, like Aretha Franklin as the “Queen of Soul” or the administration of John F. Kennedy as Camelot. There was a social and cultural element as well: In the 19th century, some rich Americans would find husbands for their daughters among the British aristocracy. And of course, the 20th century has plenty of examples of music, television, etc., that traveled between the two societies.

It's been collecting hourly data on measurements like the mountain's air temperature, total precipitation, humidity, and wind speed since the early '90s. On warm days, as sunlight heats the glaciers, the air just above the glacier's surface warms and rises. This creates a vacuum causing the cold air around the snowy peaks to rush down due to gravity. Then at night, the ice releases some of that stored heat energy, preventing the air temperature from dropping too low. The terrain has also gotten more technical as melting glaciers open up huge crevasses.

A local council candidate in Washington State decided not to cast a ballot. Damion Green ran for a council seat in the city of Rainier, located in Thurston County about 25 miles south of Tacoma. But voting for himself would have been like "stacking a deck in your favor," Green told local newspaper The Seattle Times. A coin toss ultimately decided the race, as local newspaper The Chronicle reported at the time.

The U.S. consumer agency, which enforces federal antitrust law, and 17 states filed their lawsuit against Amazon in Seattle federal court on Tuesday, asking a U.S. judge to consider an injunction and other penalties to combat alleged unlawful conduct. The FTC's lawsuit is related to but broader than a series of private consumer cases filed in recent years against Amazon that are pending in the same U.S. federal court. The private antitrust cases offer an early window into some of the legal arguments Amazon could be expected to make to challenge the FTC's lawsuit. Generally speaking, U.S. judges are "wary of using antitrust law to punish low-pricing behavior," said antitrust scholar Sean Sullivan of the University of Iowa's law school. Sullivan said it is not always a clear line between "good low pricing" — based on market competition — and "bad low pricing" that helps a company acquire or maintain market power.

On top of El Niño, there’s another climate fluctuation in the mix that amps up the likelihood of heat and drought. A fire rages in Bobin, 350 km north of Sydney, on November 9, 2019, during Australia's catastrophic Black Summer fire season. A combination of extreme heat and wind would likely fuel very intense fires “that will seem to come from nowhere,” he added. Whether summer heat will be unprecedented remains uncertain. “Increasing extreme heat is the clearest example,”he said, but it’s worsening the impacts of drought and extreme rain too.

Mount Rainier is losing its glaciers. That is all the more striking as it is the most glacier-covered mountain in the contiguous United States. The changes reflect a stark global reality: Mountain glaciers are vanishing as the burning of fossil fuels heats up Earth’s atmosphere. According to the World Glacier Monitoring Service, total glacier area has shrunk steadily in the last half-century; some of the steepest declines have been in the Western United States and Canada. Mount Rainier National Park, a popular tourist destination that gets roughly 2 million visitors every year, is feeling the effects acutely.

Dollar General shares tank after another disappointing quarter

Dollar General shopping carts are seen outside a store in Mount Rainier, Maryland, U.S., June 1, 2021. Shares of the company have fallen about 36% this year, making it one of the worst performers in the S&P 500 in 2023. In an effort to improve its business and lure in value-seeking customers, Dollar General has been investing to keep prices low for its everyday staples, which are typically less profitable. Meanwhile, sales in the home products and apparel segments, which carry higher margins, fell more than 7% each in the second quarter ended August 4. For the quarter, same-store sales fell 0.1%, compared with analysts' average estimate of a 1.08% rise, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Dollar General shopping carts are seen outside a store in Mount Rainier, Maryland, U.S., June 1, 2021. The Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based retailer has fallen short of the average analyst forecast for four straight quarters, and on Thursday cut its annual profit and sales targets for the second time this year. The quarter "marks the fourth consecutive guide down for Dollar General, which admittedly creates further uncertainty if we are hitting the bottom yet," said Raymond James analyst Bobby Griffin. "While we expect traffic trends to improve, we do not expect positive traffic until the fourth quarter," CFO Kelly Dilts said. To better compete with rival Dollar Tree and bigger grocer Walmart (WMT.N), Dollar General has been investing to keep prices low for its everyday staples, improve merchandise mix and increase wages.

NAPERVILLE, Illinois, July 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. Corn Belt has experienced much more forgiving weather this month after an unusually dry June crashed both corn crop conditions and yield ideas. Three weeks ago, corn was just 50% GE, the week’s worst since 1988. Although long ago, most years with similar gains around this time frame featured corn yields within a couple percent of trend, if not better. Keep in mind that the concept of “trend yield” is subjective and often varies by analyst. USDA’s 2023 corn trend of 181.5 bushels per acre, which some considered too high, was reduced to 177.5 last week after the dry June.

But that’s not the only effects expected: Combined with climate change, El Niño this year could dent US economic growth, potentially impacting everything from food prices to the winter clothing sales. Higher food prices are a common theme across El Niño events, according to a recent Deutsche Bank report. Dry weather has parched crops in El Salvador as the El Niño weather threatens food security. The last time there was an El Niño in 2018 through 2019, NOAA dubbed it “The Great Puny El Niño” due to its relatively weak impact on weather conditions. He projects that El Niño weather events could cause $84 trillion in economic losses in the 21st century.

The RNC set a number of benchmarks a campaign needs to hit to make the August 23 debate. Candidates must poll at 1% or higher in three polls with over 800 likely Republican voters. Not many polls have over 800 likely Republican voters, so that'll be harder to hit than some expect. That's a high bar for some campaigns in the increasingly busy bottom of the race, but that's not even the number that's going to screw them. The pair have met regularly in Masters tournaments and Fritz had the upper hand with a three-match win streak against Rublev, but it was the Russian who prevailed in an encounter that was suspended for nearly two hours in the final set due to rain. Very tough for me mentally to play against him," fifth seed Rublev told reporters. Rublev had the opportunity to serve for the set but Fritz converted his fourth consecutive break point to take the opener as his rattled Russian opponent requested a bathroom break before the second set. Although Fritz saved three match points on serve, Rublev served for the match in the next game to move into the final where he will meet either Jannik Sinner or Holger Rune.
"Our country is once again being tested," Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, said in a 3-minute video announcement. Once he does so, he'll be the fourth Republican to enter the Republican primary contest against former President Donald Trump. Nikki Haley of South Carolina announced that she was appointing then-Rep. Tim Scott to the Senate on December 17, 2012. Haley and Scott could potentially be competitors to win the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Haley, who was South Carolina governor at the time, appointed Scott to the seat in 2013 after then-Sen. Jim DeMint resigned.
Major registries in the carbon offset market are systematically over-crediting projects and delivering dubious carbon offsets, a practice that allows some companies to make unjustified claims of climate progress, according to a new report published Tuesday in the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change. A group of researchers led by Barbara Haya, director of the Berkeley Carbon Trading Project, studied nearly 300 carbon offset projects across the world that comprise 11% of all carbon offset credits to date. Carbon offset projects allow businesses and governments to balance out their carbon emissions by supporting green initiatives that reduce or sequester an equal amount of carbon pollution. The report comes amid repeated concerns over whether carbon offsets are an accurate and effective way to mitigate climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Voluntary carbon offset programs have been widely criticized as insufficiently regulated schemes that allow governments and corporations to undermine net-zero emission targets.
REUTERS/Bing GuanNEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday blocked 10 companies from selling certain gun components in New York while the state pursues a lawsuit against them aimed at ending sales of illegal, untraceable "ghost guns." The preliminary order by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan adopts an agreement reached between New York Attorney General Letitia James and the companies last month, court records show. "Today's court order will help protect New York communities and save New Yorkers' lives," James said in a statement. The lawsuits claimed that the companies were creating a public nuisance by selling gun frames and receivers without serial numbers to consumers. Three defendants have settled with New York City, agreeing to stop selling guns there.
